Benefits of Travel Insurance

If your existing health insurance plan does not provide coverage when you are traveling, or is not adequate for your needs, purchasing travel insurance is the only way you can get the necessary protection for you and your family to cover a medical emergency.  It gives you access to the care you need when you need it, and it provides peace of mind and financial security by helping to reduce your out-of-pocket expenses if you do experience a medical emergency.

What Type of Policy Do You Need?

There are several different types of travel insurance policies available, including single trip, multi-trip and long-term.  The one that is right for you will depend on the frequency and length of your trips.  If you’re planning a one-time visit outside of your home province, the single trip option will cover you.  If you’re a frequent traveler, multi-trip insurance provides the coverage you need for multiple trips throughout the year up to 60 days if you qualify.

If you will be working, studying, or living outside of your home province for an extended period of time, long-term travel insurance covers you for more than 182 days.  With long-term coverage, if you experience a medical emergency while traveling, you can receive follow-up visits and treatment outside of Canada.  You do not have to return to Canada to get ongoing treatment if it is necessary.  Be sure to check with your government plan if you will be traveling for an extended period of time because your provincial coverage ends after you are out of the country for more than a specified number of days during the year.

Purchasing Travel Insurance

If you have never purchased travel insurance, you probably have some questions about the different policies available and what they cover.  A customer service representative can help you assess your needs, answer any questions you have about the available policies and assist you in choosing the plan that’s right for you and your family.
