An Ounce of Prevention

While most people admit to enjoying “fresh from the dentist” clean teeth, few enjoy the time they spent in the dentist’s chair to get that feeling. But a fresh mouth is far from the only reason to scheduling your next cleaning appointment. Regular dental checkups can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay, and catch oral cancer in its early stages. In addition, most of the dental procedures we generally think of as unpleasant (root canal, tooth replacement, bleeding gums) can be prevented with regular dental check-ups.

Other Health Conditions

Did you know your dentist can help alert you to problems with your overall well-being? Research has shown a correlation between oral health and other health problems. Your dentist may alert you to:

  • Anemia If your gums are pale or sore and your tongue is smooth or bulging, you may be anemic.
  • Heart Disease or Stroke Risk Gum disease is associated with an increased risk of heart disease or stroke. Bacteria starting in a simple cavity can enter your bloodstream and create inflammation in your body, which in turn increases your risk of disease.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis A person suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis is more likely to be diagnosed with gum disease because of the same inflammation that makes them more susceptible to other illnesses.
  • Diabetes Is your mouth always dry? Does your breath make people run for cover when you exhale? It may be more than a lack of water and a love of garlic. Along with other symptoms, these are signs your blood sugar is out of control.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues Your dentist will check your teeth for signs of erosion. If present, it might be caused by stomach acid which acts as an enamel stripper.

By understanding the interconnection between your dental health and your general physical condition, you can take steps to protect yourself from illness.
