It’s vital to protect yourself against unexpected illnesses or injuries while you’re away from home with Emergency Medical Travel Insurance. While provincial healthcare covers hospitalization, coverage can be limited outside your home province. If you’re travelling in another province or country, the protection of your provincial healthcare plan will not be in place. If you have a medical emergency while you are travelling, you will be responsible for arranging care — and paying for it out of pocket.

At SBIS our travel insurance partner TuGo offers products and services that are easy to use and go beyond financial protection. They promise to help however they can when things go wrong or when you just want some helpful advice. They deliver what you need when you need it — including single trip and annual multi-trip travel insurance specifically designed for pandemic times.

COVID-19 Coverage for Canadian Travellers

TuGo’s Emergency Medical Insurance offers COVID-19 coverage for all ages regardless of the government of Canada’s current travel advisory level. A Level 3 “avoid non-essential travel” advisory does not impact coverage on any of TuGo’s plans.

From emergency room hospital fees to ambulance (ground, mountain or sea), to emergency dental services and more, TuGo Emergency Medical travel insurance will cover costs that provincial healthcare won’t.

COVID-19 coverage is included with TuGo’s Emergency Medical Insurance. The COVID-19 benefit is only applicable if you follow your provincial health authority’s vaccination protocols and:

  • Have been partially vaccinated, at least 14 days before departure, or
  • Have been fully vaccinated before departure, or
  • Aren’t yet eligible for a vaccine due to age.

You will be covered up to the policy limit for

  • Hospitalization and treatment for medical emergencies, including COVID-19
  • Ground, air or sea ambulance services
  • X-rays and other diagnostic laboratory tests
  • Prescription drugs
  • Essential medical supplies such as crutches
  • Fracture treatment benefit
  • Other professional medical services like physio, etc. to relieve an acute emergency
  • Emergency dental services
  • Emergency air transportation (must be pre-approved)
  • Remote evacuation
  • Family transportation
  • Return of dependent children
  • Return of travelling companion
  • Return of excess baggage
  • Return of vehicle
  • Air travel delay expenses, included with MyFlyt™
  • TuGo Telemedicine service

What if I am required to quarantine while I’m travelling?

TuGo’s Trip Interruption coverage will provide benefits such as the cost of non-refundable unused prepaid travel costs and/or the cost of a one-way economy airfare to return home. If you are quarantined, the benefit is limited to  $1500 per insured person.  If you have family coverage, the benefit maximum is based on each person covered.

There’s coverage for your visitors too!

TuGo’s Visitors to Canada Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance or Trip Interruption Only plans provide coverage for your visitors who must cancel or interrupt their trip as a result of a medical condition related to COVID-19. For example, if they need to cancel due to getting sick with COVID-19, TuGo will cover that, but if they need to cancel because of a lost job or flight cancellation due to COVID-19, that won’t be covered.

Here’s TuGo’s infographic so you can know what is and isn’t covered at a glance:

Whatever your travel plans are, talk to us at SBIS

As a traveller you should know how Travel Advisories affect your travel insurance coverage. Some travel insurance plans like those from Blue Cross in Canada now contain COVID-19 clauses that protect you in case of an upgraded travel advisory warning, including cancellation insurance, but most do not. That means you could be left with a nasty bill if your unexpected health expenses abroad aren’t covered due to an level 4 travel advisory. And that’s why you can ask us any question you have.

Looking for more than just emergency travel medical insurance? At SBIS we can help with that too with Trip Cancellation & Trip Interruption Insurance that can provide coverage if you must cancel or interrupt your trip due to a medical condition related to COVID-19.
